Gluten-Free French Toast

5 from 3 reviews

This classic gluten-free French Toast recipe is delicious, easy to make, and is perfect for brunch or breakfast on the weekends. French toast is a recipe that I love to make-especially on lazy weekends. There really is something so special about warm French toast with fresh maple syrup and crispy bacon. Yum.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 Tbsp Butter
  • 8 Slices Gluten Free Sandwich Bread or Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 1 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/2 Tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/4 Tsp Cinnamon
  • Maple Syrup –
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • For Homemade Whipped Cream for Topping- 1 Cup of Heavy Cream with 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar (Whip heavy cream and sugar with a stand mixer or hand mixer until whipped and fluffy.

Instructions

  • To make this French toast, you’ll want to start out by heating a griddle or skillet to medium heat.
  • Next, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl until they’re well combined. You do not want clumps of cinnamon.
  • Once the mixture is ready, you’ll dip your bread into it and let it soak on each side for about 30 seconds. This will help the bread absorb more and make it nice and creamy.
  • Add butter to your heated skillet or griddle. I use a few pats of butter. I like it sizzling when I add the bread as I want a nice crust to form on the French toast.
  • Then, place your soaked bread on your heated skillet or griddle until it’s golden brown on each side about 2-3 minutes per side. Once all of the slices of bread are cooked, you can serve with fresh fruit, pure maple syrup and dust it with a little powdered sugar. If you are making a bigger batch, pre-heat your oven to 250 and keep the cooked French toast in a oven safe dish to keep warm.
  • For Homemade Whipped Cream for Topping- 1 Cup of Heavy Cream with 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar Whip heavy cream and sugar with a stand mixer or hand mixer until whipped and fluffy.

Notes

  • Eggs are one of the main ingredients in French Toast-use Large eggs
  • I actually am so fortunate to have a dedicated gluten-free bakery about 10 minutes away. I have them make the bread special and it is so good. They even make Brioche bread for the holidays. Need I say more? For this specific recipe- I’m using gluten-free sourdough bread.
  • Vanilla extract adds a little extra flavor and really takes it to the next level.
  • I prefer to use heavy cream but you can use any milk you like. Whole milk or half n half would be my second choice. I’ve tested this recipe with just milk and to be it was ok. I have found that heavy cream ensures a rich and delicious texture.
  • Always use real Maple Syrup.  I warm my maple syrup on the stove on low heat.  For this recipe, I decided to use Rasberry Syrup.
  • Dust Gluten-Free French Toast with Powdered sugar and add a Tbsp of Butter  to top of French-Toast.
  • Make sure all your ingredients are Gluten Free.
  • This is enough to feed two adults.  If you’re making it for a crowd, I would count on 3 pieces of French Toast per person.
  • For Homemade Whipped Cream for Topping- 1 Cup of Heavy Cream with 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar (Whip heavy cream and sugar with a stand mixer or hand mixer until whipped and fluffy.
