Serving up warm French toast covered with powdered sugar and swimming in maple syrup will bring instant smiles. It really is perfect for those laid back weekend mornings with family or during the holidays.
WHAT IS FRENCH TOAST?
French toast is a dish made of sliced bread soaked in eggs, milk and spices, then pan fried with lots of butter. When French toast is considered a sweet dish- milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg are commonly added before pan frying, and then topped with powdered sugar, butter, fresh fruit and real maple syrup.
WHERE DOES FRENCH TOAST COME FROM?
“French toast” was first used in 17th century England. The recipe and the name were brought to America by the early settlers. In France the dish is called “pain perdu” meaning lost bread. Why lost bread? Well, in the old days people needed to use up the stale bread they had, otherwise it would need to be thrown out. It really stemmed from not wanting to waste food.
One thing I love about gluten-free French toast is that you can make as little or as much as you want. Another reason I love gluten-free French toast is that you can use any type of bread that you like. You can even take something like Banana bread and turn it into French toast.
I’ve been making French toast for as long as I can remember. I honestly held off making French toast after I was diagnosed with Celiac because I was worried it wouldn’t taste as good as real bread so to speak. Happy to say, I over-came my fear and tried it.
And to be honest with you all, I was pleasantly surprised. I cannot believe it took me so long to find out that French toast is perfect for gluten-free bread. Just because I am gluten-free doesn’t mean we have to miss out on French toast.
A FEW BASIC INGREDIENTS ARE ALL THAT YOU NEED
All you really need are a few basic ingredients, most of which you likely have in your pantry and refrigerator. You can even scale it up or down to make enough for a couple people or scale it up to make a large batch for a crowd. As far as time goes, all you really need are about 15 minutes- and voila you have gluten-free sourdough French Toast. A great addition to French toast is my make ahead mini frittatas.
For this recipe, I recommend using cast iron or a scanpan frying pan. Why is that? Well, cast iron is my preferred choice for cooking these days. It heats evenly, cooks like a dream, and clean-up is easy. A griddle will also work for this recipe.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED
- 3 Tbsp Butter-
- 8 Slices Gluten Free Sandwich Bread or Gluten Free Sourdough Bread
- 3 Large Eggs
- 1 Cup Heavy Cream
- 1/4 Tsp Cinnamon
- Maple Syrup
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
Whipped Cream-
- 1 Cup Heavy Cream
- 1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
HOW TO MAKE GLUTEN-FREE FRENCH TOAST
- To make this French toast, you’ll want to start out by heating a griddle or skillet to medium heat.
- Next, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, nutmeg and cinnamon in a bowl until they’re well combined. You do not want clumps of cinnamon.
- Once the mixture is ready, you’ll dip your bread into it and let it soak on each side for about 30 seconds. This will help the bread absorb more and make it nice and creamy.
- Add butter to your heated skillet or griddle. I use a few pats of butter. I like it sizzling when I add the bread as I want a nice crust to form on the French toast.
- Then, place your soaked bread on your heated skillet or griddle until it’s golden brown on each side about 2-3 minutes per side. Once all of the slices of bread are cooked, you can serve with fresh fruit, pure maple syrup and dust it with a little powdered sugar. If you are making a bigger batch, pre-heat your oven to 250 and keep the cooked French toast in a oven safe dish to keep warm.

Notes
- Eggs are one of the main ingredients in French Toast-use Large eggs
- I actually am so fortunate to have a dedicated gluten-free bakery about 10 minutes away. I have them make the bread special and it is so good. They even make Brioche bread for the holidays. Need I say more? For this specific recipe- I’m using gluten-free sourdough bread.
- Vanilla extract adds a little extra flavor and really takes it to the next level.
- I prefer to use heavy cream but you can use any milk you like. Whole milk or half n half would be my second choice. I’ve tested this recipe with just milk and to be it was ok. I have found that heavy cream ensures a rich and delicious texture.
- Always use real Maple Syrup. I warm my maple syrup on the stove on low heat. For this recipe, I decided to use Rasberry Syrup.
- Dust Gluten-Free French Toast with Powdered sugar and add a Tbsp of Butter to top of French-Toast.
- Make sure all your ingredients are Gluten Free.
- This is enough to feed two adults. If you’re making it for a crowd, I would count on 3 pieces of French Toast per person.
- For Homemade Whipped Cream for Topping- 1 Cup of Heavy Cream with 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar (Whip heavy cream and sugar with a stand mixer or hand mixer until whipped and fluffy.
