EASY SIMPLE DESSERTS ARE WHAT I AM ABOUT
For me, I do not want a recipe that is overly complicated to make. For the holidays and special occasions, I’m definitely okay with complicated. Being a mom and working full time makes the days short, and the weekends even shorter.
I knew that for me to put this recipe on my blog, it had to be easy to make and come together quickly. This recipe takes less than 10 minutes to assemble and less than 20 minutes in the oven.
I can honestly promise you that this recipe is super easy to make. There is no rolling out the dough and no complicated ingredients. What could be more simple than that? And it’s beyond delicious.
ARE DANISHES BETTER FOR BREAKFAST OR DESSERT?
Danishes can honestly be served for breakfast and dessert. The plus for breakfast is that they are easy to take with you and bring on the go. After a long day’s work, there is nothing like a warm cheese danish with a cup of hot tea or coffee. For me, it’s even better when the fire is going and I am curled up reading one of my favorite books, especially now that the cooler weather is coming in New England.
Cheese danishes are a staple for breakfast when you’re out and about-but they’re so much better when you make my GF Cheese Danish Recipe at home. Cheese danishes are a fan favorite in most bakeries these days. They are a great choice if you want a filling pastry that isn’t overly sweet or messy. My cheese danishes are out of this world tasty!
WHAT ARE CHEESE DANISHES?
Cheese danishes are a pastry made with yeasted “viennoiserie” dough. It is a multilayered sweet pastry. Cheese danishes are a variant of a puff pasty and similar to croissants, in that it is made of laminated yeast-leavened dough that creates layers and texture. That basically means the dough has added ingredients that include, sugar, milk, and eggs.
WHAT IS PUFF PASTRY?
Puff pastry is a flaky light pastry made from laminated dough and butter. What that really means is that it’s alternating layers of butter and dough. High fat butter is needed to get a nice and flaky tart. The only ingredients used are water, flour, butter and salt. I love puff pastry recipes so much. If you love this recipe, please try my Tomato and Brie Tart– it is beyond amazing.
WHERE DID CHEESE DANISHES ORIGINATE FROM?
The start of of the Danish pastry is around 1850 in Denmark. Austrians helped Danish bakers by bringing along new baking traditions and pastry recipes. One such technique that was brought to Denmark was the Viennese lamination technique. Another fun fact is that Danish pastries are not really danish. These yummy delights are actually called Vienna bread.
WHAT TYPE OF CHEESE IS IN A CHESE DANISH?
I used plain cream cheese for this recipe. The cream cheese goes so well with lemon, egg yolk and sugar. Cream cheese is fantastic to use with desserts because of its soft texture and mild flavor. Please remember to use real fat cream cheese. It really does make a difference-especially with desserts.
THIS GF CHEESE DANISH RECIPE CHECKS OFF ALL THE BOXES-
The outer crust is crisp without being too hard, and the pastry is flaky and soft. Even though this is gluten-free, the flavor is pretty close to a regular cheese danish. I also really like my pastries filled. There is nothing worser than a pastry with almost no filling. My recipe is generous with the filling.
WHAT OTHER FILLINGS CAN YOU USE FOR DANISHES?
Some danish varieties can include- cherry jam, chocolate cream cheese danish, blueberries and cream cheese danishes, berry danish, raspberry cream cheese danish and apple cream cheese danish are just a few of the amazing varieties. When you’re craving a danish, try using my base for your next dessert. Add your favorite flavors and toppings to enjoy of the best and easiest desserts.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR GF CHEESE DANISH RECIPE-
- 1- 8 Ounce Full Fat Cream Cheese
- 1 Egg Yolk
- 4 TBSP Granulated Sugar
- 1 Large Egg
- Juice from 1 Lemon
- 1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1- 8 Ounce Schar Gluten-Free Puff Pastry
- Extra sugar for dusting
INSTRUCTIONS FOR GF CHEESE DANISH RECIPE-
- Preheat oven to 400 Degrees F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Beat 1 egg with one teaspoon of water in a small bowl and set aside.
- Beat the egg yolk, softened cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and vanilla extract in a medium bowl with a hand mixer on medium high speed until the sugar is blended and the cream cheese smooth.
- Make sure that if your puff pastry is frozen that it has thawed for at least 3 hours. I then put in the fridge until I’m ready to use as gluten-free puff pastry is easier to work with when cold.
- Lay out the puff pastry and cut into 4 evenly sized squares. To make sure your puff pasty doesn’t puff up when cooking-pierce the center with a fork. Do not pierce the folded edges.
- Fold the corners of the squares over by about 1 inch to make an octagon shape. This does not have to be perfect.
- Spoon the cream cheese mixture evenly into the center. Do not spread the cream cheese.
- Brush the all the edges with the egg wash so the puff pastry gets golden in color and flaky.
- Generously dust each danish with granulated sugar.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until done.
