Creamed peas without flour are a cozy side dish for any Sunday supper or holiday meal. Petite peas are simmered in a buttery cream sauce that will delight your taste buds from the very first bite. This recipe fits that bill. This favorite is an easy classic and for good reason. It’s delicious and easy peasy!
WHAT ARE CREAMED PEAS WITHOUT FLOUR?
Creamed peas are peas simmered in a creamy home-made sauce. It is super simple to make but for sure a classic. If you want to impress your guests at your next dinner party, make them creamed peas. I love making creamed peas because they add a fancy touch to any meal.
While many recipes may use cream cheese or cream of mushroom soup in the sauce, my recipe is about as simple as it gets. The white sauce is made from scratch using heavy cream, butter and cornstarch as the thickening agent. You’ll really love the fact that there’s hardly any prep work, and that thing comes together in just a couple of minutes.
Although you could use canned peas, I honestly don’t like peas from a can. I prefer the taste and texture that frozen peas provide so that’s what I am using. If you want to use fresh peas-that’s even better. For my recipe, I use petite peas. You definitely could use canned peas if that is what you have on hand. Either will honestly work.
WHY ARE CREAMED PEAS SPECIAL TO ME?
To me, the holidays are all about comfort food. When I made prime rib for the holidays, I just knew that creamed peas had to be part of my meal. First of all, I love peas. I honestly put peas in so many things. For example, my tuna macaroni salad is one, my brown rice with sautéed mushrooms and peas are another. A lot of times, I just have plain old peas as a side dish with butter.
WHAT SEASONING AND INGREDIENTS CAN BE ADDED?
Honestly, this recipe can be made ahead of time, but I prefer eating this right after its made. You can adjust the seasoning easily to your taste, adding in herbs or cheese if you like. I cannot stress this enough- make sure you season with salt and pepper really well. There aren’t a lot of ingredients to this dish, so properly seasoning is crucial. Some ingredients I like to add are: crispy pancetta, bacon, onions and mushrooms. The plus is this dish is fully customizable. I’m all about options.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED
- 2 Tbsp Butter
- 2 Tbsp Corn Starch
- 1 1/2 Cups Heavy Cream
- Salt and Pepper to taste (season really well)
- 1 Bag Frozen Organic Peas
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREAMED PEAS-
- First, cook the peas according to the package instructions and then transfer to a serving bowl. So many brands of frozen peas you can cook in the microwave. I personally cook my frozen peas on the stove-top.
- While the peas are cooking, prepare the cream sauce. To a pan, add 2 Tablespoons of unsalted butter and let melt on low heat.
- Add 2 Tablespoons of Cornstarch and whisk for about a minute on medium heat. You want to cook that for at least a minute so that it doesn’t taste like cornstarch as we cannot use regular flour.
- Gradually add the heavy cream and salt and pepper. Stir off and on for a couple minutes until the sauce is nice and thick.
- Pour sauce over warm peas and toss to coat.
- This feeds my family of 3. If you have a larger family-I would double the recipe.
