The best gluten free sloppy joes are made with real ingredients that your whole family will enjoy. My sloppy joes are a quick and easy weeknight meal that comes together in less than 30 minutes. These sloppy joes are a family hit any night of the week.
Who needs canned sloppy joes when you can just as easily make sloppy joes at home. These sloppy joes are one of my son’s favorites. This is a great recipe to have whenever you need a quick and easy meal.
TOOLS NEEDED
THIS REALLY IS A BUDGET FRIENDLY MEAL
This honestly is a budget-friendly family favorite. Why go and buy a can of Manwich when you can make a much better version at home that tastes better, is healthier and also very budget friendly. Ground beef is affordable, and so versatile. It really can be used for most dinner options. This recipe can feed about a family of 4.
WHAT ARE SLOPPY JOES?
The sloppy Joe is basically ground beef cooked in a tomato based sauce, and served on a bun. I add peppers and onions for texture and added flavor. I prefer to use a red, yellow or orange pepper as the green peppers can be bitter. The tomato mixture and spices are all things you should have on hand.
ARE GLUTEN FREE SLOPPY JOES HEALTHY?
They can be. It all depends on how your make them. The plus is that when you make sloppy joes at home, you control the ingredients. The canned sloppy joes are loaded with sodium, sugar and preservatives.
For the ketchup, you can use low or no sugar, organic, or make your own. You can always leave out the brown sugar, but I do find that this recipe needs a little bit of sweetness.
You could even replace the ground beef with ground chicken or ground turkey. Unfortunately, it will not have the same depth of flavor.
ARE SLOPPY JOES GLUTEN FREE?
All of the ingredients in sloppy joes are naturally gluten free, except for Worcestershire sauce. There are some brands that are not gluten free, but I always check my grocery store, and am able to find a gluten free worcestershire sauce pretty easily.
Most brands of ketchups and and mustards are gluten free. Since you will be using your own spices, you shouldn’t worry. I always recommend reading every label if you have Celiac Disease. Look for the gluten free logo or symbol.
WHY HOME-MADE SAUCE IS BETTER FOR MY BEST GLUTEN FREE SLOPPY JOES?
My home-made sauce is made with real ingredients. The base of this yummy sauce is ketchup, and full of flavor with a combination of ingredients that really make this come together.
You can also control how thick your sloppy joes are by how much water you add. Use more or less depending on your personal preferences.
WHAT’S THE BEST GROUND BEEF TO USE?
In my house, I always you at least 90 percent lean ground beef. My favorite is 93 percent lean ground beef, but I cannot always find it. In any case, I personally do not want to be draining fat off. It’s more work than I want to deal with. If you prefer 85 percent, then that is absolutely fine as well. Go with whatever your personal preference is.
CAN SLOPPY JOES BE FROZEN?
Yes. This mixture freezes well. You can store in a ziplock freezer bag or an airtight container. Just remove from your freezer the night before and thaw in the fridge. Heat on the stove and add water as needed until you’ve reached your desired consistency.
WHAT TO SERVE SLOPPY JOES WITH?
In my opinion, these need to be served on bread. You could also serve this on top of rice. If your are looking to eat healthier, you can omit the bun, or eat in the grass. Sloppy joes go great with my creamed peas, or my budget friendly home-made gluten free pasta salad. Both recipes are super easy to make, budget friendly and taste delicious.

- Make sure your Worcestershire sauce is gluten free. Not all brands are.
