Frittatas should be one of your favorite things to make for breakfast. As much as I love waffles or muffins for breakfast, sometimes I just need a change.

Frittatas might seem like an obvious choice for breakfast or brunch, but frittatas are also great for dinner. Some days at work are long and hard, and this recipe is something quick to throw together.

WHAT’S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICHE AND A FRITTATA?
- Frittatas are crustless. Quiches have a baked pie crust. Quiches also have a higher dairy ratio, and are baked in the oven.
- Frittatas are between a between a quiche and an omelette. Frittatas also have considerably less cream. Typical frittatas are cooked on the stove-top, but I prefer to bake mine in the oven.
- Frittatas are a great way to use up leftover meats and vegetables you have on hand.
WHY YOU NEED A GOOD FRITTATA RECIPE?
For starters, frittatas are super easy to make. You don’t need any special kitchen tools for this recipe. This frittata recipe is naturally gluten free, and can also be made dairy free, by substituting a dairy free substitute. Frittatas are a great way to use up leftover meats and vegetables that you have on hand.
Frittatas are also very budget friendly. The base of this is eggs, and a handful of other ingredients. This whole meal cost me less than 12 dollars to make, and it feeds a family of four.
I opted to fill mine with ham, kale and cheese. Make sure if you are using ham that is says gluten free on the label. Not all ham brands are gluten free. I am a huge fan of kale these days, and have been eating a lot more if it lately.
ARE FRITTATAS GLUTEN FREE?
Yes, a frittata doesn’t have any bread or gluten products in it. This is one recipe that you do not have to worry about gluten free. For meats, make sure the packages say gluten free on them. Not all meat brands are gluten free.
WHY YOUR VEGGIES AND MEATS NEED TO BE COOKED?
It is very important that all the ingredients for your frittata are cooked before adding to the egg mixture. Otherwise, they will be undercooked after the frittata has finished baking. If you are using raw meats like breakfast pork sausage, you really want to make sure they’re browned and cooked through, before added the egg mixture to ensure it’s safe to eat.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EASY GLUTEN FREE BAKED FRITTATA RECIPE
- You can easily adapt this recipe with your own meats, veggies and herbs.
- To store leftovers, place in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This tastes good warm and cold. It’s just a matter of preference. A frittata lasts in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Make sure you use a cast iron pan. This helps so that it doesn’t get watery.
- You can test the internal temp to make sure the frittata is fully cooked. The temp should be at least 160 degrees F.
- Let it set for at least 10 minutes after it comes out of the oven before serving.
- Fresh herbs really help enhance a frittatas flavor. My favorite is chopped chives or parsley.
- Cast iron handles get super hot in the oven. Make sure to cover the handle with a towel or hot pad to avoid burning yourself.
- My frittata recipe baked in the oven after the vegetables and meats are sautéed and finished cooking.
HOW TO FREEZE?
If you want to freeze your frittata, make the recipe as instructed. Then, allow it to fully cool and come to room temperature. Wrap and freeze. This should last a month in the freezer.
CAN THIS BE DAIRY FREE?
You bet it can. Just use almond milk instead, and leave out the cheese, or get a dairy free cheese substitute.

- Using a cast iron pan, turn stove on to just under medium heat. Once the pan has heated up, add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Cut the ham steak into small bite sized pieces. Try to make them similar in size so that they cook evenly.
- Add the cut ham to the cast iron pan, and sauté for about 6 minutes and slightly browned. Remove the ham for the pan and set aside.
- Add two tablespoons of unsalted butter and let melt. Then, add the frozen kale and saute for about 10 minutes.
- In a medium sized bowl, whisk together 10 large eggs with the heavy cream and salt and pepper. Make sure you season the egg mixture really really well. This is the only seasoning this has.
